Events July 9th - The Americas Cup - Fernando Weber

Event 1: Floral Sculpture; The Amazon Rainforest.
It is very exciting. As any Brazilian and Latin American citizen, I am proud of the Amazon and, at the same time, it is a big responsibility to preserve its biodiversity, abundance and culture. Since I was a kid, a strong connection with nature led me to work with flowers and now I can use my creativity and techniques to attract people’s attention to all the natural beauties of our Forest, contributing to its preservation. I would like you to remember that the Amazon Forest is the lungs of the world and that there is a lot of life in it. Also, it needs the support of every one of us if it is to continue to exist. The Amazon sky is not blue, but colourful, because of the big variety of birds living there.

The Forest has marvellous orchids, heliconias, bromelias, etc, the typical tropical flowers. I really believe that its natural beauties should never be seen, or treated as commercial products through predatory exploration to make profits. However, I believe that the future lies in the sustainable usage of its riches, in order to strengthen and preserve the Forest and its native communities.

I used the wiring technique in the cane structure, which supports the test tubes, and the acrylic foils give a transparent sensation and support the structure. In July 2010, when I won the Brazilian ABAF Cup, I heard that I would be one of the representatives of Brazil in the Americas Cup, so I started studying and experimenting, even though I didn’t know the theme of the Cup.

In that moment I fell thankful, happy and, at the same time, stimulated to create new and challenging projects.
