Events July 9th - The Americas Cup - Heather de Kok

Event 1: Floral Sculpture; The Amazon Rainforest.
Personally, when I think of the Amazon Rainforest, I think of life and sustainability. I think of lushness, water, flora and fauna. I envision green trees with water dripping from the branches above. So I decided that I wanted to build a canopy of vegetation and to make sure that water is an element of the composition. I want the importance of life to come through the design.

Being from Canada, I have not had an opportunity before now to see these things growing naturally but I envision it to be Orchids, Bromeliads, and tropical flowers in rich colours like reds, oranges and yellows.

I used the principles and elements of floral design. Proportion and balance play a big part in this design because Mother Nature always gets it right. I spent quite a few days working on the support of the structure. Adding in the flowers is the easy part for me. Making sure that the elements of design are perfect is the tough part.

Surprise Item - Floral Garden; nature and art in miniature
Honestly, the first thing I thought was that there must be a mistake. I never thought of myself as being that good to be entering this calibre of competition with the unbelievable talent that I know is here. I absolutely love what I do and I love new challenges so when the shock wore off, I smiled (well….I jumped up and down crying), called everyone I love and after that, I got out my sketch book and starting drawing images in my head ofwhat I pictured Brazil to look like.

It's all about roots. In this arrangement the roots are exposed!
When you think about a Floral Garden, which plants or flowers come to mind?
Weed :)
Was it difficult creating a miniature arrangement?
Yes, because I got not much inspiration. But I'm staisfied about my creation.
