Royal Floraholland makes headway in CO2 reduction

One of Royal Floraholland's sustainable ambitions is achieving CO2-neutral energy consumption by 2025. Sustainability contributes to a future-proof marketplace and organization. In order to achieve this, they have already taken important steps in early 2020 with the switch to 100% green electricity and the installation of solar panels.

The aim of all these activities is to reduce the size of carbon footprint as much as they possibly can.

Switching to 100% green electricity
"As of 1 January 2020, we will be using 100% green electricity from European wind farms for our own operations. In doing so, we will reduce our CO2 emissions with approximately 60%. For this reason, we signed a contract at the start of the year for the purchase of Guarantees of Origin (GOs) from European wind farms for our power supply. With this, all of the electricity we are using from this year onwards will be certified to be green."

Installation of solar panels has started
"As of 2020, we will also be generating electricity through large solar panel installations, which are currently being installed on the roofs of our buildings. The installation of 3,300 solar panels at our Eelde location started on 13 January. We also want large solar panel installations at our other locations, of course. We have also received subsidies for the locations of Rijnsburg, Aalsmeer and Naaldwijk. We are currently conducting the necessary research of the roofs at these locations and more news will follow later this year." says a statement from the auction's website.

More about CO2-neutral by 2025
Royal Floraholland are also a partner in the large-scale geothermal project Trias Westland, during which they will be purchasing geothermal energy as a sustainable energy source as of 2021 in order to replace part of the gas consumption in Naaldwijk.
