Results designer Roman Steinhauer day one from the Europa Cup 2016 in Genoa
It was an exciting first day of the 2016 European Florist Championship in Genoa, with plenty amazing floral designs being created!
All competitors had to perform three tasks. Starting off with a car decoration in the morning, in this case of a small, classic Fiat, for the task “PARATA FLOREALE DI SANREMO”.
Afterwards, it was time for a special picnic task “PASTA, PESTO, E FIORI” ; a floral arrangement for a picnic in the Genovese mountains in Spring. With special attention paid to Pesto, the trademark food product of the city of Genoa!
The last task on the first day was a wedding assignment. Entitled “MATRIMONIO IN VESPA”; the instruction for the 23 competitors was to design a floral decoration for a bride, who is sitting behind her groom while he is riding on a Vespa to their wedding reception.
Flowerweb and its team was right there to bring you the end results as well as the story behind the various creations and techniques used, as told by the competitors.
Below you can see the results from Roman Steinhauer from Russia.
On our Europacup 2016 event page you can also see the floral designs from the other competitors.
TASK NO. 1: “PARATA FLOREALE DI SANREMO”- Flower corso of Sanremo
Kind of work: Car decoration. Free floral arrangement in floral foam.
Description: This work piece should represent the beauty of the Italian flower assortment. The emphasis should be on the flowers, not the construction of the design
Shape/size: The shape is free. The arrangement must not exceed a ground space of 400cmx200cm and a height of 250cm.
Technique: All live materials must be placed in floral foam. The design and materials are expected to last 4 days
I enjoy working with spring flowers a lot! We live in Siberia which has a very long with a long winter so that is why we have a special feeling towards spring flowers and always look forward to their appearance. Thanks to modern cultivation technology, these flowers can now be made available any time any season.
For the car decoration, I created a crest in the shape of an animal. Since the car is quite tiny, I decided to create something that resembles a fictional animal with a crest and tail.
Italian car? Of course I would go on a trip around Italy. I adore this country with all its traditions, people and nature.

TASK 2: “PASTA, PESTO, E FIORI”-Pasta, Pesto, and Flowers
Kind of work: Picnic in the Genovese mountains in the spring.
Description: This work is a tribute to PESTO, the trademark food product of the city of Genoa! The design should also vividly reflect the spring season.
Requirements: The arrangement has to allow 2 people to enjoy the picnic comfortably.
Shape/size: The shape is free. The arrangement must not exceed a ground space of 200cmx200cm and a height of 200cm.
Technique: Free. The design is expected to last 4 days.
First of all the spring flowers help to bring out the spring season vividly. Then the use of color in my work which includes shades of yellow, green and blue. The basic construction is made of grain and symbolizes Easter. The shape resembles rays of spring sun in the mountains peering through tree branches and shining on the first spring flowers.
Traditional spring flowers: daffodils, hyacinths, tulips etc. because they are unmatched in reflecting the spring season; despite being on sale all the year round.
I guess...Italians. I would like them to gauge my work.
As long as it reflects the spring season in Italy and fits the subject “PASTA, PESTO, E FIORI”: Because to us as foreigners, it’s kind of difficult to be completely occupied by the subject. So it would be exciting to find out the opinions of people who live here.

TASK 3: “MATRIMONIO IN VESPA” - Wedding on a Vespa
Kind of work: Floral decoration for a bride who is sitting behind her groom while he is riding a Vespa to their wedding reception.
Description: The bridal decoration has to reflect the free Italian spirit and lifestyle of the 1950’s and 60’s.
Requirements: This piece is an item designed for a bride. Make sure the item allows the couple to ride safely on the Vespa.
Technique: Shape is free. The design is expected to last 24 hours.
In Russian perspective, we view Italy in the following way (thanks to the movies from the 50`s and 60`s). Mafia in a car driving down the narrow streets, shooting as he tries to escape from the police. In a tiny yard with a backdrop of old building walls where women dry clothes, we see two boys eating pizza. Roman Holiday is one movie that clearly portrays life in Italy during that era.
In this task we create bride jewelry, and that is why I paid particular attention to fashion from the 50’s and 60’s. This includes the dresses women wore, accessories and virtually the entire fashion ensemble. It is a perfect image of a young lady combined with fashion, style and tenderness. The 50’s and 60’s are the years of Italian fashion revolution, when we saw appearance of fashion houses; when Italy becomes a fashion powerhouse. Many interesting objects appear in fashion so I decided to create a hood.
For this image I used flowers with tender shades. Although fashion is always dynamic in design and nature, wedding fashion remains more or less constant when it comes to colors.
First of all we talk of th bride having free hands so that she could hold on the groom safely while he rides the Vespa. For safety I also excluded dangling elements. I decided to make jewelry for the head and shoulders, and made technically light and transparent accessories which would let air pass and at the same time remain modern and interesting.
