Aldi vs Tesco “War of Valentine Roses”

The Mirror online has reported a looming war of roses pitting discount supermarket  Aldi and Tesco. It all started with Aldi’s offer of a Valentines’ Day bouquet of 100 stems for £25 which is £474 less than a similar bunch from Interflora.

Incredibly, the store’s budget one hundred sweetheart roses are almost 20 times cheaper than the flower delivery service’s Grand Prix version. While Interflora shoppers can expect to stump up £499.99 for bigger buds studded with diamante, savvy Romeos can save a small fortune with an equally stunning bouquet of smaller red roses.

And the chain’s bunch - which works out at just 25p a stem - is a third of the price of 100 sweetheart roses from Marks & Spencer and Waitrose where they carry a £75 price tag. Lotharios planning to make a grand gesture can expect to pay £40 at Tesco and £50 at the Co-op for the same 100 rose bouquets.

It is the first time a budget chain has launched a top of the range Valentine’s Day bouquet and Aldi expects to sell 4.2 million red roses ahead of the big day.

For those on a tight budget, Tesco, Lidl and the Co-op have single red roses for £2 while Aldi’s version in a vase costs £2.50.

This month, romantics are expected to splash out £80 million on flowers and £54 million on lovey-dovey cards as part of a £1 billion Valentine’s Day spending spree.
