"Under Construction" by Peter Boeijkens and Frank Timmerman at FleurAmour 2015
During Fleuramour 2015 in Alden Biesen the floral designers Peter Boeijkens and Frank Timmerman were asked to create a floral design work in the "Reuschenberg" room of the castle at Alden Biesen.
"Reuschenberg" room has a very long table that challanges the floral designer each year.
Together with their team of floral designers the got to work. below you can see the amazing results.

Video from "Under Construction"
The overall idea was to show the power of this enormous table. This room characteristics are mainly formed by this table, everybody will notice. In our opinion, strange things happens when colleagues have decorated this massive object.

Instead of strengthen this form and huge lines, they 'break' the surface and so, at the same time the character of this room. So we tried to find a solution to create the 'WoW' effect without spoiling the room. An other obstakel was that we can't use any materials with will damage the room. Even a small drill is absolute forbidden!
So it was impossible to hang any object, we had to come up with a technical solution to make our idea come through. Creating this arch we would only use a tiny space of the actual table. That was our first goal.
Technical it was not an easy assignment: we calculated that already the weight of the oasis would be around the 300 kg!?! Not mentioning the construction itself or the massive amount of flowers, berries & fruits. Especially the length of this object was the bottleneck we had to solve.
Together with a construction company we managed, although, we have to be honest, we encountered also some technical problems during adding the wet oasis. Forces by this kind of measurements are enormous, but lucky us we could solve them during the proces.

The colors and structure should refer to Autumn but not in a Ton sur Ton setting. Instead of that we searched the contrasting colors, shapes and structures. Main colors would be Orange, Purple, Dark Blue, supported by Red (darker) & Green. Shapes and forms should be as much as diverse as possible.
As we know what we want and the fact that we are weekly buying our own flowers & materials at the auction, we bought the materials ourselves. But DGI will cover our flowermaterials costs as well as the transport of all goods! Having these beautiful materials, from 'simple' Dahlia's to Vanda's to Germini's and Diplocyclus and much much more.....,is one thing. Using them is an other issue.
How to use this materials in one gigantic setting? The answer for us layed in the 'Old Dutch Painters'.... They painted very often, 'layer over layer' to create depth in their paintings. This is exactly what we wanted to achieve in our object.
Grouping the materials in spiral ways, but not in one direction. They had to cross each other in a natural way. The lower layers are for example, Sunflower-hearts,
Hydrangea & Dahlia's, on top of them another layer of flowers, trying to place the contrast colors next to each other. So layer over layer and topping it of with more trsnsparant branches.
It could occur that some area's are almost covered with this new layer, but it is still there, and our brain will notice, (perhaps unconsiously) these almost 'hidden' structures, colors & shapes, which forms together a harmonieus complex system.
The table it selve we covered in a gigantic tablecloth (1200 x 200 cm) formed out of natural materials, mainly leaves which were stapled and different kind of fruits: all in the color Green. Forming a green surface which shows the gigantic measurements of The Table. At the same time it forms a perfect contrast with the Arch on the table!
