A true celebration of 20 years of floral delight with Tomas De Bruyne
During the 2014 edition of Fleuramour, the organization asked Tomas De Bruyne to create a special decoration for their next event since it was going to be a very important one; it was marking their 20th anniversary.
Tomas De Bruyne was asked to decorate the main courtyard at Alden Biesen Castle since the courtyard piece has always been the focal floral creation at this magnificent event.
Feeling honored by this challenge, Tomas got to work. It took a lot of planning, materials and a team of well talented floral designers to get the job done. And the results were simply amazing.
Below is an interview with Tomas de Bruyne and making of images as he undertook the project.

They requested me to create a design with a great visual impact which should reflect 20 years of fleuramour, all in a festive atmosphere. This task takes more than just making a draft. Here, I have to combine a certain craftknowledge thus I needed industry, companies and other contacts to achieve this goal. This decoration has to show what fleuramour is all about: the place where the whole industry comes together; from grower to wholesaler to consumer; the chain has to be complete. In creating this, my big thanks goes to all those people who played a role in this process.

Better to ask, how I incorporated the 20th anniversary in the project, since this was my main assignment. Well, showing three pillars standing tall and strong, as beacons throughout our lives, symbolises the three values which are as typical for the happening at Alden biesen as they are for me.

For 20 years, this event has shown a surging and incessant energy which I have externalized in my work. Courage, determination and commitment have been the corner stones of the organisers of this event. Because of these values, the event has grown to be one of the most exclusive and popular floral happenings in Europe. Unmistakably, it is at the same time the softall-encompassing flow of energy and the welcoming splendour of the surrounding that has appealed to many visitors who share the love of flowers and enjoy the pleasure of the straightforward and natural beauty of flowers as well as their intrinsic power to emotionalize.
I was very happy to work with the famous white rose Avalanche in this project. The roses have to hold for one week outside which is important. And Avalanche rose are perfect for that.
I alway take into account functional aspect with the decorative aspect.
With such an important project I have to be absolutely sure that the botanicals are perfect. From experience I know I can always count on Avalanche roses.

Some numbers :
30,000 Avalanche Roses
86 boxes of Oasis Ideal - Smither Oasis
40,000 led lights from MK illumination
10,000 cable ties
300 m2 grass
Height : 6.75 meters
Step by Step "A true celebration of 20 years of floral delight"
Can you tell us in steps how your project was created?
After understanding the request by the organization, the physical possibilities and limitations I started to design. After some quick sketches for myself to visualize my ideas I had to make a technical (autocad) drawings for the welder.
The structure is designed in a way to enable us work fast and efficiently as we only had 3 full days to setup. Next step was calculation of the materials. Thanks to my technical drawings it was possible to calculate to the finest details.
The roses had to be delivered in good state since they had to hold for one week outdoors. Working with living materials requires good knowledge on how they withstand time as well as other conditions. Well planned communication with the people at Avalanche was crucial. As a final touch we set up a lightning plan to make the decoration visually complete.
Setting the structure
Placing the "Avalanche" roses
Creating a flowing lawn
