The ambassador of the horticultural sector in 2017 is JUB Holland. This flower bulb specialist from Noordwijkerhout takes up the title on 11 January 2017. They are this year's winner of the Horticultural Entrepreneur's Prize as they perfectly suit the theme of the award: ‘Family-run companies and the art of successful succession'.
The jury was impressed by this stable, family-run company because of the long family tradition as well as the broad scale of activities in the chain. By persisting through five generations, it has created its own position on the international market. JUB Holland stands out because of its strong vision and social commitment.
JUB Holland has pioneering role in flower bulb sector
The company achieves this commitment by giving flower bulbs a place in society. These entrepreneurs search for an innovative manner of collaborating with local authorities and organisations. Bulbs that support biodiversity is an important theme. According to the award jury, the winner in 2017 conducts business with vision, daring and decisiveness. JUB Holland has assumed a pioneering role to advance the flower bulb sector a step further.
Outstanding top entrepreneurs
Kwekers Bunnik Plants from Bleiswijk and Green Specialties Holland from Lierop were also nominated for the Horticultural Entrepreneur's Prize 2017. These companies have worked for generations in an innovative way and with tenacity on a future-proof horticultural sector. As top entrepreneurs, they excel in sustainable business, market orientation, innovative products and strong international activities. At the meeting at Keukenhof on 11 January 2017, the entrepreneurs told their story about their family-run companies. They concerned traditions but also innovating entrepreneurship.
For example, Bunnik Plants chose to innovate its organisation. This pot plant company has been working for several years with self-regulating teams with their own responsibilities. Green Specialties Holland has changed direction and in its cultivation of leafy crops is no longer the producer of raw materials but the supplier of ready-made products. This company succeeded due to excellent collaboration with its chain partners.
New blood, new direction
The theme is very current in the horticultural sector. Professor Pursey Heugens from RSM Erasmus University concluded in his study 'New blood, new direction' that the succession procedure in a family-run company is not easy. His recommendation for the generation relinquishing control is 'Trust the younger generation and do not make them dependent on you'. And for the generation taking over, he says, 'Keep investing, never put off essential investments'.
